Match Play. Red trails 2-5 to 7. Should Red double? If doubled, should White take?

For money this would be a truly terrible double and nearly a beaver.

However, after Red’s double the cube will be dead, and White’s gammons are meaningless.

A doubled gammon gets Red to Crawford. How often will Red win a gammon? About 17% of the time. That is just enough to warrant a double. White’s take is trivial. Dropping would be a quintuple blunder!

This is quite a fun position to think through.
