Match Play. Red leads 4-0 to 7. How should Red play 54?

Would the 9-pt be an asset or a liability? The answer, narrowly, is that it is a liability. Red wants to clear points, not make them.

The other factor is that after 16/7 it will be easier to clear the loose blot on the 14-pt than it would be to clear the blot on the 16-pt after 14/8, 13/9.

All this adds up to 16/7 being the correct play. 14/9, 13/9 is small error.
