Match Play. Red leads 5-1 to 13. How should Red play 53?

Over the board 8/3*, 6/3 was played but threes don’t grow on trees and so Red’s priority should have been to get one of his rear checkers moving.

The real choice is between 24/21, 6/1* and 24/21/16.

The hitting play gives Red’s other blots some protection and is the correct play by quite some way. Both the pointing and the running plays are bad errors. 24/21, 6/1* also gives Red the possibility of making White’s 4-pt.

This was a question of priorities which Red, sadly, got wrong.
