Match Play. Red trails 0-4 to 7. How should Red play 41?
This position, which came up during a lesson, showed me that I have been playing this type of position incorrectly for years.
I had always assumed that giving myself two extra rolls to reach the gap in White’s prime was the priority. In fact, it is far more important to get to the edge of White’s potential full prime, stretching from his 8-pt to his 3-pt. I was amazed to find that 8/4, 6/5 is a bad blunder.
The correct play is 24/23, 8/4. Lesson very definitely learnt.
