Match Play. Red trails 2-3 to 7. Should Red double? If doubled, should White take?
This one fooled me completely. It looks like a clear double and then a clear pass because of Red’s twenty-seven pip lead in the race. Obviously White has some hitting potential l but with an open 6-pt can that really be relevant?
In a money game the answer is no but at this match score White, perhaps surprisingly, has a very clear take. The reason is the efficiency of White’s redoubles to four because four points wins him the match exactly.
This cube efficiency turns a money drop into a very clear take and in fact, dropping is very nearly a blunder. A truly fascinating and instructive position.
