Match Play. Red trails 8-9 to 11. Should Red double? If doubled, should White take?

At 3-away vs 2-away you should double early as the trailer and drop early as the leader. This is because the leader’s take point is around 28% (depending upon which match equity table you use). With an increased gammon threat the leader should drop even earlier.

In this position there is a significant gammon threat, so this is definitely a double. White’s ownership of Red’s bar-point gives him a take but it is close. For money, with a fully active cube, this position is no double/take as Red has a lot of work still to do and doubling would be grossly premature.

double seems easy to go for - 30 ways to put up the 2nd checker on the bar - already 9 checkers in the zone - probably 10 after our move.

for the take - first impression was to drop - but i m not sure as its a 2 pt board only with long way to go and cover for right - not a really flexible distribution by now - beeing white and regarding the score - i probably would have passed otb nevertheless...with the that feeling of just having made a small mistake ;) kris
