Red must go now with 21/12 and run the risk of being attacked. If not, he may well cede control of the outer boards to White if he can roll and a 5 or a 6 next turn.
Note that with 52 running out would be too risky and 12/5 would be correct. Because 21/12 safeties the fleeing checker it is the right play by a long way. Anything other play would be a blunder.
