Money Play. Should Red redouble? If redoubled, should White take?
This position came up during a training match this week.
This is clearly a powerhouse double and the instinctive reaction as White is to pass. Red will win a lot of gammons when things go well. However, White’s five-point board means that Red cannot execute an all-out blitz and a single hit by White could turn the game.
White can also win by anchoring and winning from there. Occasionally White may even win the race after no further hitting.
Nobody could be criticised for passing as White but actually the position is a small take.
Red is leading 6 pips in the race before the roll. If he just escapes his back checker, it would be a market loss most of the time, I think. He could also improve his board or attack the other White checker. The position is volatile and I would double. It is also a take I guess, because White could anchor and win the race from there.
