Match Play. 0-0 to 7. How should Red play 61?

Clearly Red should not hit – that just improves White’s timing. The question is whether it is worth slotting the bar with 8/7, with the intent of getting another checker recirculate, especially as Red’s checkers on his 6-pt are going nowhere in the short term.

This is the sort of position where only a bot can probably determine the best play. Even then, 24/17 and 24/18, 8/7 come out tied. All other moves are designated as errors, but the position will be so complex to play that you can expect many more errors before the end of the game.

Knowing how to approach such positions is the key to success. Both sides will find this one extremely difficult.
