4-away vs. 2-away gives the trailer maximum cube leverage because a doubled gammon gives him the match exactly. Study has shown that you can cube extremely early with any hint of a gammon.
This position occurs after the players have traded 21s. White has lost his anchor and so, amazingly, this is already a double and it is nearly an error not to double. A trivial take of course.
Our forebears would turn in their graves at such cavalier cube action, but timidity is not an endearing trait in backgammon and it won’t win you many tournaments.
