Match Play. Red trails 1-3 to 5. Should Red double? If doubled, should White take?

A classic 4-away vs. 2-away position.

For money this is nowhere near a double yet at this score White must drop Red’s double. Taking would be a double blunder. The 21% gammon losses are ruinous for White as he loses the match.

You don’t need much excuse to double at 4-away vs. 2-away as this position clearly demonstrates. I have noticed players doubling earlier and earlier at this score and the bots happily support this aggressive strategy.
