Match Play. Red leads 1-0 to 3. How should Red play 53?

Two checkers off the mid-point is the wrong idea. 24/21, 13/8 is a little too risky so the choice is between 24/16, with some duplication of fours, or the safe 13/5.

It is a close call but activating the rear checkers with 24/16 is the right idea. They remain connected and the move puts pressure on White to perform. Historically 13/5 would have been the preferred choice but computers have taught us how to play in such situations. 24/16 it is.
