Match Play. Red leads 3-0 to 5. How should Red play 62?
This is a ‘pay me now, pay me later’ problem where the obvious choice for pay me now is 15/7.
Red will be 16 pips up after the roll. Should he leave White a three to hit and destroy that lead? Note also that after 15/7 all of Red’s outer board points will be stripped three so there could be some awkward entering numbers for Red.
The final point to bear in mind is the score. White will be much quicker than usual to ship the cube and Red does not want to leave multiple blots.
The bottom line is that 15/7 is a bad error and Red should simply play safe with 8/6, 8/2. Pay me later is the right approach in this position.
