Money Play. How should Red play 42?

Red cannot play passively here and has to leave a shot whatever he does so he should hit and duplicate White’s fours.

By doing this he will lose more gammons but in exchange he will win more games. He exchanges 5% more gammon losses for 3% more wins which is a good trade. Bar/22, 8/4* is the correct play. Either of the other plays is an error.
