(a) Money Play. Should Red double? If doubled, should White take?

(b) Match Play. Red trails 1-4 to 7. Should Red double? If doubled, should White take?

Happy New Year to everyone!

For money this is a borderline double/no double. Red’s command of most of the board plus White’s somewhat ugly structure is counterbalanced by White’s 40-pip lead in the race. Personally, I would wait because there are very few market losing sequences.

The match score is very different. There will be a lot of gammons for both sides and gammon is just what Red wants. This is precisely the type of position you want when trailing in a match.

Now the double is crystal clear and in fact, White must drop. He gets no value from holding the cube as he will hardly ever use it to win the game and a gammon loss will put him behind in the match. Taking this double would be a blunder.
