Money Play. How should Red play 54?

There are two real choices, hitting with 13/4* or running with 24/15. Any other play is a triple blunder or worse.

I think many would choose 13/4* to gain a tempo but a return hit could be ruinous, and the game could end quickly with a cube turn.

White has a powerful home board position and if he makes his 5-pt it will be a winning prime.

24/15 triplicates White’s threes while escaping one checker from behind the growing prime. The race is close so running is a reasonable strategy.

The rollout shows that 24/15 is the correct play and that 13/4* is an error but not a blunder.
